The Direction Of Natural Light. The source of your natural light, such as windows and doors should have no bearing on how you install a laminate.

A laminate flooring stagger pattern is ideally random, with spacing between end joints between 6 and 10 inches, depending on the plank width. A random pattern can be hard to achieve when all the planks are the same length, but you can do it using offcuts from previous rows to start new rows. For strength and durability, installing hardwood flooring perpendicular to the floor joists is recommended. When hardwood floors are installed parallel to the joists, they will sag, squeak and gap. If your sub-floor is a concrete slab, you can run the floors in any direction you prefer. Sight Lines and Aesthetics The cheaper the flooring, the shorter the boards. So... you want your flooring to have long boards so they’ll look as expensive and high quality as possible. Therefore, the most popular and significant way to run your wood flooring is to... Run it from the front door, straight to the back of the house, perpendicular to the front.

Anyways, as you can see from the drawing (furniture layout included) I'm having a hard time deciding which way to run the planks. I've been told to run them the direction the light enters the home which would be perpendicular to the rear wall of windows where the views are. I've also read that I should run them longways through the home. Custom Patterns. Laminate flooring is available in a dizzying array of patterns, from wood to parquet to tile. You can mix and match the laminate, as long as it's all made by the same manufacturer. As a general rule, laminate flooring should be laid in the same direction as the longest wall in the room. If the room happens to be square, the floor boards should run in the direction of the room's light source.

Laminate flooring and space. Laminate flooring laid lengthways can have an expanding effect. Depending on how you want to show your room, you can choose the orientation of the laminate flooring panels. For example, if you want a hallway to seem longer, it is better to use the laminate flooring in the lengthways direction. I'm installing wood laminate planks in our dining/kitchen area. This is right at the top of our entry-way stairs. Is there a standard direction for the planks to run? Should the planks run lengthwise, which would be your line of travel into the rooms, or widthwise, which would obviously be opposite. FYI, the windows in the rooms would be parallel to the width of the rooms, if that is to be. The most common is where laminate flooring is being installed in lets say a living room, and flows into the hallway. How to install laminate from one room into a hallway. After installing the laminate into the hallway down one side, you will need to know how to finish the last row of laminate in the hallway.

Electrical wire should never be run under flooring as it is a potential fire hazard. If the floor joists are accessible from underneath, drill holes through the floor and through the joists and run electrical wire through them. If you can't access the floor joists, run electrical wire in surface-mounted conduit attached to the wall or baseboard. Whenever you are placing wood flooring in a hallway or any long and narrow area, it should run in the direction away from the doorway. The Direction You Choose Needs to Transition When laying hardwood flooring throughout your home, you need to take special care in choosing the direction that the wood will be placed. Wood flooring is run parallel to a light source in the main room. This offers the flooring the most "fluid" look to it. If you run them perpendicular (horizontal as you put it), you will find that all the "long" edges of the tile will be "back light" because of the light streaming in through the window. This can be very irritating for some people.

So, if you’re redoing the floors in the foyer, run the planks in the same direction as the front door. Other considerations, such as steps, should be taken into account. Of course, planks are installed horizontally on stairs, so this may be the best bet if you’re aiming for uniformity from your steps to your main floors. Laminate has nothing to do with the joists, it's plywood that you run perp from joists. You can run Laminante anyway you wish but running it the longest way of the room results in less wast. Make shore your seams are 12" apart / staggered As well as the 1/4 space from walls. Run it parallel to the doorway. Then you can put in a "t" mold and keep on going. Your light sources in your room should also be considered, like how the light falls between the boards. That can either lengthen or shorten the sought-after look of the room. Boards that run from your entrance outwards, can make a space appear larger or even longer, while flooring laid from the side wall to side wall will shorten the visual impact. I always thought the best way to lay hardwood floors was perpendicular to the floor joists, as the wood planks spanning the joists adds some structural integrity to the floor system. Running parallel would remove any structural contribution by the flooring planks, such that you're relying on just one layer of plywood typically. When it comes to wide and narrow flooring, we have a tendency to categorise these according to our life experiences. In the same way that we associate hats on women with weddings, we have a tendency to associate highly polished, narrow board wood flooring with formal settings (or, depending on your age, school gyms!).

Before you start, decide on the best direction to run the flooring and how to transition from room to room. If you have a plan, you'll create a flow both in the installation and in the appearance.
